Product Research for Dropshipping: Signals That Show Demand

Vettoz · · 6 min read

Good product research for dropshipping checks three signals before you spend on ads: sellers are paying to advertise the product for weeks (the Meta Ad Library shows how long each ad has run), buyers are already purchasing it at a known price (TikTok Shop and Amazon listings show price and sales), and buyers complain about something the current versions get wrong (Reddit threads and video comments). A product with all three has proven demand and a reason to buy yours. A product with only a viral video has a trend.

Why do most “winning products” stop winning?

You see a product with millions of views, find it on a supplier site, build a store over the weekend and launch ads. By the time your first ad spends, many other stores found the same video. Your cost per sale climbs, the margin disappears, and the ad account has nothing to show for it.

The cost is the test budget you spend learning what the evidence already showed. Views tell you people watched. They don’t tell you anyone paid, at what price, or how many sellers are already fighting for the same buyer.

The fix is to read the signals that cost sellers money, because people only keep paying for what works.

Which signals show a product actually sells?

Signal Where to read it What it tells you What it misses
Ads running 30+ days Meta Ad Library A seller keeps paying, so it likely converts Their margin and their returns
Number of active ads Meta Ad Library How crowded the paid market is Who is winning
Units sold and price TikTok Shop listings Real purchases at a real price Off-platform sales
Price range of rivals Amazon, TikTok Shop Where you can price and still compete Their costs
Complaints in comments Reddit, TikTok, YouTube What current versions get wrong How many buyers share it
Video plays TikTok, YouTube Attention and reach Whether viewers buy

Read ad run length first, because a seller who keeps an ad live for a month is paying for it every day. The Facebook Ad Library product research guide shows how to read it. For sales and prices, the TikTok Shop product research guide walks through each listing.

How do you find winning products step by step?

  1. Start from a problem, not a product. Search the problem buyers have (“cable mess under desk”, “dog hair on couch”). Products that solve a named problem sell on a clearer promise.
  2. Read the Ad Library. Search the product’s plain name. Count the active ads and note how many have run 30 days or more.
  3. Check sales and price. Find the top TikTok Shop and Amazon listings. Write down the price and units sold, and the lowest and highest competitor price.
  4. Read the complaints. Open the top Reddit threads and the comments under the biggest videos. List what buyers say breaks or costs too much. How to find pain points on Reddit shows how to tell real pain from noise.
  5. Find your angle. If buyers complain about one thing and no ad answers it, that is your angle. See how to find competitors for a product idea for mapping who you are up against.
  6. Price it. Anchor on the median competitor price, not the cheapest. How to price a new product covers the method.
  7. Test small. One landing page, a few ads, a fixed budget and a stop rule.

What does the evidence look like for one real product?

Here is one check Vettoz ran on October 18, 2026, for an undated paper planner for adults with ADHD, sold as a physical product in the US. These numbers are what the check found that day:

  • 960 active ads in the Meta Ad Library for “adhd planner”, 12 of the ads read had run for 30 days or more.
  • The top TikTok Shop listing sold at $18.19, with about 178,000 units sold.
  • 10 priced competitors from $2.20 to $63, with a median of $11.49.
  • 15 Reddit threads with 561 comments between them.

It scored 86 out of 100, a “go”, with one warning: the market is busy. Demand and payment were proven; the open question was the angle. That is a common shape for a real winning product: lots of sellers, and room only for one with a clear reason to choose it.

When is a dedicated dropshipping product research tool the better pick?

If your work is sourcing, a dedicated dropshipping product research tool is the better choice. Those tools focus on suppliers and shipping times, track other stores, and import products into your shop. Vettoz does none of that.

Vettoz is for the step after you have a candidate: checking one product idea against the evidence (ads, sales, prices, complaints), scoring it and telling you what is weak. Many sellers use both: a sourcing tool to find candidates, and a check before spending on ads.

What should make you drop a product?

  • Lots of views and no ads that have run longer than a week or two.
  • Every listing priced so low that shipping eats the margin.
  • No complaints at all, which usually means nobody cares enough to talk about it.
  • A product that only sells with a claim you can’t prove, which ad platforms reject.

Signs your product idea is bad covers more warning signs.

FAQ

Which signal matters most in product research for dropshipping?
Ads that have run for 30 days or more in the Meta Ad Library. Sellers rarely keep paying for an ad that loses money.

Is TikTok virality enough to pick a product?
No. Views show attention. Check TikTok Shop sales and ad run length to see if attention turns into purchases.

How many products should I research before testing one?
Research until one product passes all three signals: long-running ads, real sales at a price with margin, and a complaint you can answer. That can take a few candidates or many.

Can I do this research for free?
Yes. The Ad Library and the marketplace listings are free to read, and so is Reddit. It takes a few hours per product by hand.

Check a product with Vettoz

Vettoz runs inside your AI. For a physical product he reads Reddit threads and comments, X posts, TikTok and YouTube videos, active Meta ads, TikTok Shop listings and Amazon results through Google. He scores pain, demand, pay, room and reach from 0 to 100 with a GO, TEST or RETHINK verdict, and your AI writes the report with every source linked.

When a product holds up, a full idea adds Branding (names with free domains, a palette, a logo and a brand board) and Marketing (an Instagram carousel, a post and three Meta ads rendered in your brand).
