Signs Your Product Idea Is Bad (and What to Change)

Vettoz · · 6 min read

The signs your product idea is bad are in the evidence, not in your gut: nobody describes the problem in their own words, the conversation you found is about a different problem, nothing close sells at a real price, a few giant brands own every search and ad, or you can’t name a single place where the buyers gather. One sign means rework the idea. Several at once mean pick another problem. Most bad ideas are fixable by changing the buyer, the angle or the kind of product.

Knowing early is the point. A bad idea found in an afternoon costs an afternoon. A bad idea found after launch costs the months you spent building it, plus the confidence to try the next one.

Why do bad ideas feel good?

Because you’re the first buyer. You had the problem, you imagined the fix, and it made sense to you. Friends agree because they’re polite. An AI chatbot agrees because it answers from memory and tends to be encouraging. None of that is evidence about strangers with money.

The fix is to look at what other people already do: what they complain about, what they search, what they buy, and what someone pays to advertise. The signs below come from that evidence.

What are the signs, and what do they mean?

Sign What it usually means What to change
Nobody describes the problem It’s your problem, not a market’s Find who has it worse, or drop it
The conversation is about something else Your keywords match a different problem Search the job, not the product name
Only free tools and DIY People don’t pay for this job Find a group that pays, or a paid adjacent job
No ads, no listings, no prices No proof anyone sells this Test a price before you build
Giant brands own every result Hard for a newcomer to be seen Serve a group the giants serve badly
Interest without urgency Nice to have, not need to have Find the moment it hurts most
You can’t find the buyers Reach will cost more than the product earns Pick a buyer who gathers somewhere
Your angle is about looks Buyers talk about time or money instead Lead with the pain they describe

What does each sign look like up close?

Sign 1: nobody describes the problem

Search Reddit and X for the job your product does, in plain words. If you find nothing, or only people asking hypothetical questions, the problem may not be painful enough to pay for. Real pain shows up as people describing what they tried and how it failed. How to find pain points on Reddit shows what that looks like.

Sign 2: the conversation is about something else

This one fools people because the numbers look big. In one example check Vettoz ran on October 18, 2026, a SaaS that reminds remote teams to drink water found plenty of threads, but most were about electrolyte drinks and supplements, not about teams or managers. The check scored it 46, a “rethink”, and flagged the evidence as off topic. The fix isn’t always to drop the idea. Often it’s to search the buyer’s job (“remote team engagement”) instead of the product’s surface (“hydration”).

Sign 3: nothing sells at a real price

Competitors are good news when they charge. If every close product is free, or every listing hides its price, payment is unproven. That doesn’t kill the idea, but it moves “will they pay?” to the front. How to find competitors for a product idea and how to price a new product show how to read what exists.

Sign 4: giants own every search and every ad

When a few big brands show up in every search result and every ad slot, a newcomer struggles to be seen. Check the Meta Ad Library: many advertisers with long-running ads means a healthy market; one or two giants with everything means a hard one. The Facebook Ad Library guide explains how to read it. The usual fix is to narrow: a specific group, a specific job, a specific format the giants don’t bother with.

Sign 5: interest without urgency

“That would be useful” is not demand. Look for urgency words in the comments: people who need it this week, who already pay for a worse version, who describe a deadline or a cost. If all you find is mild interest, look for the moment when the problem hurts most and sell to that moment.

Sign 6: you can’t find the buyers

A good product with unreachable buyers is a bad business. If you can’t name two communities, a few creators or a handful of searches that point at your buyer, reach will eat your margin. App ideas have their own version of this, covered in app store research for app ideas.

Sign 7: your angle is about looks, while buyers talk about time or money

In the same set of checks, a Notion template for freelance designers was scored on two angles. “Get paid faster” scored 58 out of 100. “Aesthetic workspace” scored 32, because it answered none of the pains in the evidence. Same product, different promise. If your pitch is about beauty while the comments are about getting paid, change the pitch, not the product.

Sign 8: you keep finding reasons not to test

If you’ve done the research and still haven’t put a landing page or a pre-sale in front of strangers, that’s a sign too. A test costs little. How to validate a business idea before building lists a low-cost test for each kind of product.

What should you do when you see these signs?

Change one thing and check again, because a single change tells you what moved the result:

  • Change the buyer. The same product for a group that hurts more or pays more.
  • Change the angle. Lead with the pain buyers describe.
  • Change the kind. A course instead of a SaaS, or a template instead of an app, when payment for the format is clearer.

FAQ

Is one sign enough to drop an idea?
Rarely. One sign means rework. Several at once, especially no pain and no payment, mean pick another problem.

Are competitors a bad sign?
No. Competitors who charge prove payment. A market with giants only is the hard case.

What if my idea is new and has no competitors?
Then the pain and a pre-sale matter more, because nothing else proves demand.

Can a bad score turn into a good one?
Yes, after you change the buyer, angle or kind and check again. The score describes the idea as described, not the problem forever.
