How to Find Pain Points on Reddit (Without Fooling Yourself)
To find pain points on Reddit, search the words a buyer would use for the problem, not your product. Open the threads with the most comments from the last year, and read the comments rather than the posts. Real pain shows up as people describing what they tried, why it failed and what they would pay to fix. Copy those comments word for word with their links. They are evidence you can link to, and they often become the words your landing page uses.
Reddit is where people describe problems in their own words, to strangers, with no reason to be polite. That makes it a strong source for validating a business idea before building, as long as you read it with a method.
Why is Reddit good for finding pain points?
Surveys ask people to imagine. Reddit threads show what they already did. In one of our example checks (an ADHD planner), a comment on r/ADHD read: “I’ve tried something similar but always got tripped up on the ‘skim it once a day’ step.” (source) That one sentence gives you the problem, the fix they already tried and the exact moment it breaks.
Comments also show volume and agreement. A post with a few points might be one person’s bad day. A thread with hundreds of comments where people add their own versions of the same complaint is a pattern.
The trap is reading Reddit to confirm what you already believe. You will always find one thread that agrees with you. The method below is there to stop that.
How do you search Reddit for pain points?
- Write three to six buyer phrases. Use the words of the problem: “can’t stick to a planner”, “adhd planner”, “freelance invoices late”. Not “productivity tool”.
- Search with a one-year window, sorted by relevance. Older threads describe a market that may have moved.
- Open the threads with the most comments, not the most points. Comments are where people describe their own case.
- Read the top comments of each thread. Skip bots and moderator messages.
- Note the subreddits that keep appearing. They are where your buyers gather, which tells you about reach as well as pain.
How do you tell acute pain from mild interest?
Sort what you read into four levels. Only the top two make a product.
| Level | What it sounds like | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| No pain | Nobody describes the problem at all | Wrong keywords or no market |
| Mild | “Would be nice”, “I sometimes wish” | Interest, not demand |
| Real | People describe the problem and what they tried | A market exists |
| Acute | Frequent, emotional, failed fixes, asking for help | Strong demand, often with willingness to pay |
Acute pain has markers: a story of failed fixes, a cost (time, money, embarrassment), a request for recommendations, or an outright “I’d pay for this”. Count how many separate people say it, not how strongly one person says it.
What should you write down?
- The quote, word for word, with its link. Never paraphrase. The exact words matter for copy and for honesty.
- What they tried. These are your competitors, including free ones. See how to find competitors for a product idea.
- Why it failed. This is your positioning.
- Any mention of paying. “I bought”, “I’d pay”, “worth it” are signs of willingness to pay.
- The subreddit. Where you could reach these buyers later.
What does this look like in a real check?
Here is one example check Vettoz ran on 2026-10-18, for an undated paper planner for adults with ADHD in the US. It read 15 Reddit threads with 561 comments between them, mostly in subreddits about ADHD and productivity. Comments described the systems people had built for themselves, from a single brain-dump journal to a counter in a spreadsheet. That check scored pain at the top level, “acute”.
A second check the same day, for a team hydration-reminder SaaS, shows the opposite failure. The Reddit results were mostly about electrolyte drinks and water bottles, not about teams or software. Lots of comments, wrong topic. Vettoz flagged the evidence as off topic and scored the idea 46, “rethink”. Volume isn’t pain if it is about something else.
What mistakes should you avoid on Reddit?
- Counting upvotes as demand. Upvotes measure agreement with a post, not intent to buy.
- Reading only one subreddit. One community can have its own quirks. Check two or three.
- Posting “would you buy this?” People say yes to be nice. Read what they already do instead.
- Ignoring the date. A thread from years ago may describe a problem that a new product already solved.
- Treating Reddit as the whole market. Pair it with proof of payment: Ad Library ads, TikTok Shop sales, App Store ratings.
How do you turn pain points into a product decision?
Group your quotes by pain, then count the separate people behind each group. The biggest group with acute markers is the problem your product should lead with. Check it against what you found on competitors: if every existing product already promises to fix it, you need a different angle; if buyers say the existing fixes fail, you have one. Write a single sentence: who has the pain, what they tried, and why it failed. If you can’t fill all three parts from real quotes, read more threads before building.
FAQ
How many Reddit threads should I read?
Ten to fifteen relevant threads with their top comments is usually enough to see whether a pattern exists. If the first ten show nothing, change the keywords before reading more.
Is it OK to quote Reddit comments in my research?
For your own research notes, yes, with links. If you use a quote publicly, don’t include usernames and don’t present it as a testimonial for your product.
What if Reddit has nothing on my idea?
Check the keywords first: use the problem’s words, not your solution’s. If it is still empty, the pain may be too rare or the buyers may gather elsewhere. That is one of the signs your product idea is bad.
Can ChatGPT read Reddit for me?
Not reliably on its own. A chatbot answers from training data, which may be old. Give it live threads through a tool, as in validate a business idea with ChatGPT.
Read Reddit with Vettoz
Vettoz searches Reddit for each of your keywords over the last year, reads the top comments of the busiest threads, drops bots, and keeps the quotes with their links. He adds X, TikTok, YouTube, active ads and competitors, then scores pain, demand, willingness to pay, room and reach with the evidence linked. Your AI writes the report inside Claude or ChatGPT.
