Validate a Business Idea With ChatGPT, With Real Evidence

Vettoz · · 5 min read

You can validate a business idea with ChatGPT if you use it for what it is good at: sharpening the idea and reading evidence you give it. On its own it answers mostly from its training data, and it tends to agree with the person asking. So it can’t tell you what buyers say this month or what competitors charge today. Connect it to live data, or bring the evidence yourself, before you let it judge. This guide shows both ways, with prompts.

What does ChatGPT do well when you validate an idea?

Much of the thinking work:

  • Turning a vague idea into a testable one. “An app for productivity” becomes a buyer, a problem and a result.
  • Listing the assumptions. Who has the problem, how often, what they use now, what they would pay.
  • Drafting interview questions that ask about past behaviour instead of opinions.
  • Brainstorming search phrases a buyer would type, which you then use to look for evidence.
  • Reading evidence you paste in. Summarising threads, sorting complaints, comparing prices.

Used this way, it saves you time on the thinking. The trouble starts when you ask it for the verdict.

Where does ChatGPT go wrong on validation?

Three limits matter here.

Limit What it looks like What to do
Training data, not today Competitors named from memory, some outdated or closed Check every competitor it names yourself, or connect live data
Browsing is partial When browsing is on, it reads a limited number of pages, not hundreds of comments Bring the comments and prices yourself, or use a research tool
It tends to agree An encouraging plan for almost any idea Ask it to argue against the idea, and ask for evidence, not opinions

The last one is the subtle one. Chat models are tuned to be helpful, and helpful can read as encouraging. Ask “is my idea good?” and you may get a yes with conditions. That is encouragement, not validation.

How do you prompt ChatGPT to be honest about an idea?

Change the question from “is it good?” to “what would prove it wrong?”. Prompts that help:

  1. “List the five assumptions this idea depends on. For each, say what evidence would prove it false.”
  2. “Argue against this idea as a skeptical buyer who already uses [current solution].”
  3. “Here are 20 comments from people with this problem. Which pains come up more than once? Quote them.”
  4. “Here are 10 competitor prices. What is the median, and where would a new product fit?”

Notice that prompts 3 and 4 need evidence from outside the chat. That is the point: the judgment is only as good as what it reads. Where to find that evidence is covered in how to find pain points on Reddit and how to find competitors for a product idea.

How do you give ChatGPT live market evidence?

You have two options.

Collect it by hand. Search Reddit, TikTok, the Meta Ad Library and the marketplaces for your category, copy the strongest threads, comments, ads and prices into a document, and paste it into the chat. It works, and it can take an afternoon per idea. Facebook Ad Library research and TikTok Shop product research explain the sources.

Connect a research tool. ChatGPT supports custom MCP servers, which let it call outside tools during the chat. Vettoz is one: it collects the evidence, counts the signals and scores the idea, and ChatGPT writes the report from what came back.

To connect it:

  1. In ChatGPT, open Plugins in the sidebar, click Add and choose Add custom MCP server.
  2. Name it Vettoz, keep Connection on Server URL, paste https://vettoz.si/mcp and leave Authentication on OAuth.
  3. Tick I understand and want to continue and click Create as a plugin.
  4. Sign in to Vettoz and choose Allow.

What does a check look like once it’s connected?

You describe the idea, the kind (physical product, digital product, SaaS or mobile app) and who buys it. ChatGPT picks three to six keywords a buyer would type and asks you before the check runs, because each check uses one of your checks. Then Vettoz reads Reddit threads and their top comments, X posts when configured, TikTok and YouTube videos, active Meta ads, Google results, and TikTok Shop or the App Store depending on the kind.

He scores the idea from 0 to 100 on pain, demand, willingness to pay, room and reach, and returns every piece of evidence with its link. Two real results from checks run on 2026-10-18:

  • An undated paper planner for adults with ADHD (physical, US) scored 86, a “go”, with 10 priced competitors from $2.20 to $63.
  • A SaaS that reminds remote teams to drink water scored 46, a “rethink”, and was flagged because much of the evidence was about something else.

The second result shows why this matters. Asked without evidence, a chat model could have written a launch plan for it. With the evidence in front of it, the check said rethink, and said why.

FAQ

Can ChatGPT validate a business idea on its own?
It can help you think it through, but it can’t see current conversations, ads or prices unless browsing is on, and even then it reads a limited sample. Treat its verdict as a hypothesis until you have evidence.

Does this work with Claude too?
Yes. The same prompts work, and Vettoz connects to Claude as a custom connector. See the setup guide.

Will ChatGPT make up competitors or numbers?
It can, especially for small or recent markets. That is why the Vettoz report method asks for a link next to every claim, and why you should check any competitor it names from memory.

What should I do after a “test” verdict?
Run the cheap test the report suggests before building. The steps are in how to validate a business idea before building.

Is it worth paying for a tool if ChatGPT is free?
It depends on how many ideas you check. By hand, gathering evidence for one idea can take hours. A tool is worth it when your time costs more than the plan. Compare in idea validation tools.
