TikTok Shop Product Research: Price, Sales and Demand

Vettoz · · 5 min read

TikTok Shop product research means searching the Shop for the words a buyer would use, then reading three numbers on each listing: the price, the rating and the units sold. Units sold is the part most marketplaces hide, and it is the closest public number to “do people actually buy this”. Pair the listings with the TikTok videos behind them, because on TikTok the video sells the product, not the listing page.

For a physical product idea, TikTok Shop answers two questions fast: is there a price band buyers accept, and is the category still open enough for a new seller? This guide shows how to read it, what it can’t tell you, and how it fits into validating a business idea before building.

Why research TikTok Shop for a physical product?

Amazon and most other marketplaces show reviews, which lag behind sales and only a small share of buyers leave. TikTok Shop listings show units sold directly. That turns a guess (“this looks popular”) into a number you can compare.

It also shows how the product is sold. Many TikTok Shop products are sold through short videos by creators. If the top listings all have videos with large view counts, the channel works for this category, and you can study the hooks that move it.

The risk of skipping it: you price from your costs instead of the market, or you launch into a category where a few sellers already move tens of thousands of units at a price you can’t match.

How do you search TikTok Shop for an idea?

  1. Search three to six phrases a buyer would type (“adhd planner”, “brain dump notepad”), not your product name.
  2. Open the top listings and note the price, the rating, the units sold and the seller.
  3. Search the same phrases in the regular TikTok search and note the videos with the most plays.
  4. Check which listings the top videos link to. That shows which products the content actually sells.

Keep the results in the same sheet you use to find competitors.

What should you read on each listing?

Field What it tells you Watch out for
Units sold Real demand at this price Counts can include bundles and variants
Price The band buyers accept Discounts and promotions change it often
Rating Whether buyers are satisfied High ratings with few sales mean little
Seller One brand or many One seller with most of the sales is hard to beat
Title The words sellers rank for Stuffed titles show the keywords, not the brand

What does real TikTok Shop data look like?

Here is one example check Vettoz ran on 2026-10-18, for an undated paper planner for adults with ADHD in the US:

  • The top TikTok Shop listing, an ADHD cleaning planner, sold for $18.19 with about 178,000 units sold.
  • Across the competitors with a visible price, prices ran from $2.20 to $63, with a median of $11.49.
  • The 12 TikTok videos the check read had about 9.4 million plays between them.

Read together: buyers pay roughly $10 to $25, the category sells in large volume, and short video is the channel. The same check scored the idea 86 out of 100, “go”, but marked “room” as its weakest dimension at 69. High sales and many sellers mean you need a sharper angle, not just a cheaper planner.

How do you know if the category is still open?

Look for these patterns:

  • High sales spread across many sellers: open. Buyers don’t have a favorite yet.
  • High sales concentrated in one or two sellers: hard. You would compete with their volume and reviews.
  • Low sales everywhere, lots of listings: weak demand at these prices, or the wrong keywords.
  • High sales, low ratings: a clear opening. Buyers want the product and dislike what they get.

Low ratings with many sales tell you what to fix. Read the reviews and the comments under the top videos, then check Reddit for the same complaints. See how to find pain points on Reddit.

How do you read the videos behind the sales?

Open the five most-played videos for your main phrase and watch the first three seconds of each. Write down the hook (the first line said or shown), whether a creator or the brand posted it, and whether the video links to a Shop listing. If the same kind of hook keeps winning, such as a before-and-after or a messy-desk reveal, that is the creative your product will need. If the top videos are unboxings by small creators, the category runs on affiliate creators, and you will need a sample budget for them. Write the hooks into your sheet next to the listings.

What can’t TikTok Shop tell you?

  • Profit. Units sold says nothing about margin or returns. Aim for a price of at least three times your landed cost, then check it against the market. More in how to price a new product.
  • Other channels. Some categories sell mostly on Amazon or through Meta ads. Check the Facebook Ad Library too.
  • Other countries. TikTok Shop isn’t open everywhere, and results differ by market.
  • Digital products and software. For those, look at Etsy and Gumroad, or at the App Store. See how to validate a digital product idea.

FAQ

Is TikTok Shop units sold accurate?

It is the number TikTok shows. Treat it as a strong signal, not an audited figure, and compare listings with each other rather than reading one in isolation.

Do I need a TikTok Shop seller account to research?

You don’t. Anyone can search the Shop and read listings as a buyer.

What price should I start at?

Inside the band the top listings sell at, with room for cost of goods and shipping. If you can’t hit at least three times landed cost there, rethink the product or the format.

Should I only sell on TikTok Shop?

Not necessarily. Use it as research even if you sell elsewhere. It shows demand and creative that work in short video, which helps on any channel.
