Market Research for Small Business: A Free Template
Market research for a small business comes down to six questions you can answer from free, public sources in a few days: who buys, what problem they have, how many people look for a fix, what they pay today, who already sells it, and what would make them switch. Answer each one with evidence you can link, put the answers on one page, and end with a verdict and one cheap test. You don’t need a survey firm or a paid report to make a good decision about a new product.
This guide gives you the six questions, the free sources for each, a one-page template, and an example from a real check.
Why does small business market research go wrong?
There are two usual mistakes. The first is skipping it: you trust that friends liked the idea and start building. The second is doing the wrong kind: you download a market-size report that says the category is worth billions and feel reassured.
Neither tells you whether your buyers will pay you. A big market number says nothing about whether this product, at this price, for this buyer, will sell. The cost is months of work and savings spent on a launch that gets polite interest and few orders.
What questions should your market research answer?
| Question | What a good answer looks like | Free sources |
|---|---|---|
| Who buys? | One clear buyer and their situation | Reddit, reviews, competitor pages |
| What problem do they have? | Quotes in their own words, with links | Reddit, reviews, video comments |
| How many look for a fix? | Search volume, threads, video views | Google suggestions, TikTok, YouTube |
| What do they pay today? | Real prices from real listings | Amazon, Etsy, TikTok Shop, the App Store |
| Who already sells it? | 5 to 10 competitors with proof of sales | Google, marketplaces, the Meta Ad Library |
| Why would they switch? | A complaint that repeats across competitors | One and two star reviews, threads |
If you only have one afternoon, answer the problem, price and competitor questions. Those three settle most ideas.
How do you do market research for a startup or a product, step by step?
- Write the idea in one sentence: what it is, who buys it, what it solves.
- Pick 3 to 6 phrases a buyer would type. Use the problem, not your product’s name.
- Collect quotes. Thirty or more, word for word, with links. Customer pain points covers where to look and how to rank them.
- List competitors and prices. Use a competitive analysis template so every row has the same facts.
- Check paid demand. Ads that have run for weeks mean sellers keep paying to reach these buyers.
- Fill the one-page template below and write a verdict.
- Run one cheap test before you build: a pre-order page, a fake door test or a small ad.
The method is the same for a small business and a startup. What changes is the source list: a physical product leans on marketplaces, a SaaS idea on Google and review sites, an app on the App Store.
What does a market research template look like?
Copy this into a doc. Keep it to one page.
Idea: [one sentence: what, for whom, what it solves]
Buyer: [who, in what situation]
Top pain: [the problem that repeats, plus 3 quotes with links]
Demand: [threads and views, plus ads running and for how long]
Price band: [lowest, middle, highest competitor price]
Competitors: [5 to 10 names, price, proof of sales]
Gap: [the complaint that repeats across competitors]
Verdict: [go, test or rethink, and the weakest point]
Next test: [one test, its cost, the result that counts as a yes]
The verdict line is the one people skip. Write it anyway. A page of facts with no decision is a report you will read again next month and still not act on.
What does a market research report example look like?
Here is the shape of one check Vettoz ran on October 18, 2026, for an undated paper planner for adults with ADHD, sold as a physical product in the US. These are the numbers that check found that day:
- Problem: 15 Reddit threads with 561 comments between them, mostly in ADHD and productivity subreddits.
- Demand: 960 active ads in the Meta Ad Library for “adhd planner”, 12 of the ads read had run for 30 days or more.
- Price band: 10 priced competitors from $2.20 to $63, with a median of $11.49.
- Proof of sales: the top TikTok Shop listing sold at $18.19, with about 178,000 units sold.
- Verdict: 86 out of 100, a “go”. Weakest point: room, because the market is busy and the product needs a clear angle.
Notice what the report doesn’t contain: a total market size. Every line is something a buyer or a seller did, with a number you can check.
When is this method the wrong fit?
If your business is local, like a café or a salon, the deciding facts are different: foot traffic and the competitors on the map near you. Online threads and marketplace prices help less there, so Vettoz is not the right tool for it. Your local small business support office or library can often point you to free local data.
FAQ
How much does small business market research cost?
It can cost nothing but time. Every source in the table above is free to read. Paid tools save hours when you research ideas often.
How long should it take?
An afternoon for a first read, a few days for a thorough one. If it takes weeks, you are probably collecting more than the decision needs.
Should I run a survey?
After the public research, if you have an audience to ask. Surveys reward polite answers, so treat them as a check, not as the main evidence.
Can ChatGPT do my market research?
On its own it answers from memory. Connected to live sources it can write the report for you. See AI market research tools for product ideas.
Run the research with Vettoz
Vettoz fills most of this template for you inside Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor. For one idea he reads Reddit threads and comments, X, TikTok and YouTube, active Meta ads, Google, and TikTok Shop or the App Store depending on the kind of product. He scores pain, demand, pay, room and reach from 0 to 100 with a GO, TEST or RETHINK verdict, and your AI writes the report with every source linked. Your first 2 checks are free, no card; packs of 1, 4 or 15 ideas are one-time payments. Create a free account and type “check this idea with Vettoz”, or compare the packs first.
