Market Research for a Product: 7 Steps Before You Launch
Market research for a product means finding out, before you launch, who will buy it, how many of them are looking, what they already pay for, and why they’d switch to you. You can do most of it with public evidence: buyers’ own words on Reddit and in comments, search and video demand, competitors’ prices and reviews, and ads that have run for months. Seven steps cover it, and the last one is a small test that turns research into a decision.
Why do market research before launching a product?
Because launching is the expensive way to find out. Building the product, ordering stock or paying for ads costs far more than a few hours of reading. Research tells you whether to go ahead, which buyer to aim at, what price the market accepts and which promise to lead with. It also tells you when to stop, which is the cheapest outcome of all.
What are the 7 steps of market research for a product?
| Step | What you find out | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Define the buyer | Who has the problem and who pays | Your idea sentence, communities |
| 2. Collect the pain | The problem in buyers’ words | Reddit, forums, comments |
| 3. Size the demand | How many people look for a fix | Google searches, video views, thread counts |
| 4. Map competitors | Who already sells a fix | Google, App Store, TikTok Shop, Amazon |
| 5. Check prices | What buyers pay today | Competitors’ pricing pages and listings |
| 6. Read reviews and ads | What buyers hate and what sells | One-star reviews, Meta Ad Library |
| 7. Run a small test | Whether buyers act on your offer | Waitlist page, fake door, pre-orders |
1. Define the buyer
Write one sentence: who has the problem, in what situation, and who pays. “Busy parents” is too broad. “Parents of kids with ADHD who struggle to keep a daily routine” is a buyer you can find.
2. Collect the pain
Search Reddit and forums for the problem, not the product. Copy the strongest lines word for word. These are your future headlines. How to find pain points on Reddit shows the searches that work.
3. Size the demand
Look at three signals together: monthly Google searches for the problem, views on videos about it, and how often new threads appear. One weak signal is fine. Three weak signals mean a small market.
4. Map competitors
List everyone who sells a fix, including indirect ones like spreadsheets, services and DIY. Competitors are good news: they prove people pay. How to find competitors for a product idea and the competitive analysis template help you organize them.
5. Check prices
Write down what each competitor charges and how. The range tells you what the market accepts. How to price a new product covers picking your own.
6. Read reviews and ads
One-star reviews show what buyers hate about existing products, which is your opening. Ads that have run for months in the Meta Ad Library show which promises sell, because advertisers stop paying for ads that lose money.
7. Run a small test
Research shows what’s likely. A test shows what buyers do. Put a page with your promise and price in front of the buyer and count sign-ups or pre-orders. See product validation for five ways to run it.
What are the types of market research?
- Primary research: you collect it yourself, through interviews, surveys and tests.
- Secondary research: you read what already exists, such as threads, reviews, ads, search data and reports.
For a new product, start with secondary research. It’s faster and free, and it tells you who to interview and what to ask. Then use primary research, mainly tests, to confirm.
How much does market research for a product cost?
By hand, it costs time: a few hours per product for steps 1 to 6, plus a small ad budget if you test with paid traffic. Agencies charge far more and suit larger launches. AI research tools sit in between. Market research tools for product ideas compares the options.
How does Vettoz do market research for a product?
Vettoz runs steps 2 to 6 from inside Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor. Give him the product idea, the kind (physical, digital, SaaS or app) and who buys it. He reads Reddit, X, TikTok, YouTube, active Meta ads and Google, plus TikTok Shop or the App Store depending on the kind. He counts the signals and scores the idea on pain, demand, pay, room and reach, with a GO, TEST or RETHINK verdict. Your AI writes the report with the links behind each score, and you can download it as a PDF.
The first 2 checks are free. Packs are one-time: $9 for 1 idea, $29 for 4, $99 for 15. Paid ideas also get names with free domains, a brand board and launch ads for step 7.
