To find a target market for a new product, list three to five groups of people who might buy it, then check each group against public evidence: do they describe the problem in their own words, do they already pay for a fix, and can you reach them in one place. Score every group on those three questions and pick the one that scores highest as your first market. Test it with a cheap offer before you build for anyone else. The first market is a starting point you can change later, not a choice you are stuck with.

This guide walks through each step with the sources that answer it, and ends with a sentence you can use to describe the market you picked.

## What is a target market?

A target market is the specific group of people you build and sell for first. “Busy people” is not a target market. “Nurses on night shifts who meal prep on Sundays” is.

A useful target market has three parts you can check:

- **A shared problem.** The same pain shows up when they talk.
- **A shared place.** They gather in the same subreddits, hashtags, channels or stores.
- **A shared budget.** They already spend money on the problem, even on a poor fix.

If you can’t name all three, the group is still too vague to sell to.

## Why does picking “everyone” cost you sales?

Most first launches aim wide because a narrow market feels small. The result is copy that speaks to nobody: a landing page with no clear “this is for you”, ads that cost more per click because the audience is too broad, and a product that tries to fix four different problems at once.

The cost shows up after launch. Visitors arrive, read a general promise and leave, and you can’t tell which group was the right one because you never chose. A narrow first market gives you a clear signal, yes or no, in weeks.

## How do you find a target market, step by step?

### 1. List candidate groups

Write down every group that might have the problem your product fixes. Name them by situation, not by age or gender: “people who just adopted a dog”, “freelance designers sending invoices”, “parents packing school lunches”. Aim for three to five.

### 2. Read where each group talks

For each group, search the problem in the places buyers describe it in their own words. Reddit threads, comments under TikTok and YouTube how-to videos, X posts and one and two star reviews of competitors. Search for the problem, not your product. [How to find pain points on Reddit](https://vettoz.si/blog/how-to-find-pain-points-on-reddit) shows the search phrases that work.

Note how often the problem comes up and how strongly people write about it. A group that swears about it beats a group that shrugs.

### 3. Check what each group already pays for

Look for money already moving. Competitors with reviews and sales, products in the [TikTok Shop](https://vettoz.si/blog/tiktok-shop-product-research) or the App Store, and ads that keep running in the [Meta Ad Library](https://vettoz.si/blog/facebook-ad-library-product-research). An ad that has run for months usually means someone is paying to reach that buyer and it works. Read more in [willingness to pay](https://vettoz.si/blog/willingness-to-pay).

### 4. Check how you would reach them

A market you can’t reach is a market you can’t sell to. Write down one channel per group: a subreddit, a hashtag, a newsletter, a marketplace, a search query. If the only answer is “ads to a broad audience”, the group is harder to start with.

### 5. Score and pick one

Put the groups side by side and score each question from low to high.

| Question | Low | High |
|---|---|---|
| Do they describe the problem? | A few vague mentions | Many threads, strong words, workarounds |
| Do they already pay to fix it? | Only free workarounds | Competitors with sales, long-running ads |
| Can you reach them in one place? | Spread everywhere | One subreddit, hashtag, store or search |
| Is the group big enough to matter? | A handful of posts a year | Fresh posts every week |

Pick the group that scores highest across all four. A tie usually goes to the one you can reach most cheaply.

## How do you describe the target market you picked?

Write one sentence: “[Group] who [situation] struggle with [problem], today they [workaround], and they gather in [place].” Fill every bracket from what you read, not from guesses.

That sentence does three jobs. It tells you who to show the first version to, it gives you the words for your headline (see [brand positioning for a new product](https://vettoz.si/blog/brand-positioning-for-a-new-product)), and it tells you where to run your first test.

## How do you test the target market before building?

Run a cheap test aimed only at the group you picked:

- **A [fake door test](https://vettoz.si/blog/fake-door-test):** a landing page that describes the product to that group, with a button that measures interest.
- **A pre-order or waitlist** posted where the group gathers.
- **Two or three positioning angles** shown to the same group, to see which promise gets the most clicks.

If the test is flat, go back to your score table and try the next group before you change the product. Often the product was fine and the market was wrong.

## Target market vs target audience vs niche: what’s the difference?

| Term | What it means | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Target market | Everyone you sell the product to | Home cooks who meal prep |
| Target audience | The slice a message or ad speaks to | Night-shift nurses who meal prep on Sundays |
| Niche | A narrow market with its own needs and places | Meal prep for night-shift workers |

For a new product, start with the niche. Widen to the full market once the first group buys.

## FAQ

**How big should my first target market be?**
Big enough that new posts about the problem appear every week, small enough that you can name where they gather. If you can’t find a single place where they talk, it’s too wide.

**Can I have more than one target market?**
Later, yes. At launch, one. Two markets means two sets of copy, two channels and a split signal.

**Should I use demographics like age and income?**
Use them as a check, not a starting point. Situations and problems predict buying better than age does.

**What if no group scores high?**
That is a warning sign about the idea, not just the market. See [signs your product idea is bad](https://vettoz.si/blog/signs-your-product-idea-is-bad).
